FATHER HILDEBRAND TOSSED his car keys in the bowl by the door and set the cabinet down just inside the doorway. It was so heavy it made grooves in the shag carpet. Panting, he wiped a sheen of sweat from his brow. His back hurt something awful. He was supposed to lift with his knees, but in the excitement of nabbing the cabinet he’d forgotten proper form. He’d pay for that tomorrow, when he woke up sore and cranky. It used to be that it didn’t matter how improperly he’d lifted or carried something, his muscles always bounced back. Now, it was another story.

Maybe he was getting old. Or maybe he’d gotten old already and somehow hadn’t noticed. He didn’t know which was worse.

Once he caught his breath, Father Hildebrand surveyed his home. Where should he put the cabinet? Its size made it difficult to wedge between his existing furniture. It almost needed its own space, propped against the wall. It was certainly more than worthy of that.

He looked around. Framed photographs of his church and parishioners hung on the wall by the door, sharing space with an entry table and a glass bowl filled with keys. A thrift-store lamp sat at the end of the table. That wall was out of the question.

There was a half-wall and a bar between the living room and the kitchen, but the cabinet would come up past the bar. That wouldn’t work either.

He could put it in the bedroom, which was sparse in terms of furniture and decor, but it seemed a crime to hide such a lovely thing away. It needed to be one of the first things people saw when they entered his house. The hallway leading to the bedroom and the bathroom was empty, but it didn’t belong there. The shadows would swallow it. No, he had to find a spot for it in the living room, somewhere it could be the focal point.

Father Hildebrand looked at his couch. Like most everything in his home, it sagged and creaked in places. The sunlight that streamed in through the front windows had faded the rich coffee color to a dull, brownish gray. Still, he couldn’t part with it. The couch had been his first purchase upon becoming a priest at St. Matthew’s. Its sentimental value made up for its eyesore nature.

The shag carpet was another story. It was ugly for no reason.

Sighing, Father Hildebrand grabbed the wobbly end table and dragged it to the side. He hated to put the cabinet next to the couch, but it made the most sense there. He didn’t intend to use it like he used the end table, but he supposed he could if he wanted to. It just seemed too opulent to have a coaster and a mug placed on top of it.

He looked back at the wine cabinet. Its luster and latticework thrilled him. Would it hurt to purchase some wine bottles for it? It seemed like such a shame not to use the object to its full potential.
